Have you ever noticed why basketball players, or those who wear basketball shoes, often favor designs with a thick and substantial-looking sole?

Does the weight of basketball shoes actually affect your performance?

Techniques for choosing the right basketball shoes for your needs

As a basketball player, do you believe that basketball shoes need to have some weight to help you play better, or that they make your jumps 10 times more powerful? Or have you ever noticed why most basketball players or shoes are designed with soles that look high and heavy, as if they are a functional aid rather than just an aesthetic choice? Or perhaps all of this is just a belief created by players to boost their own confidence, which has been passed on until it became the question: "Does the weight of basketball shoes really affect performance?"

There is a research study titled "Increased Athletic Performance in Lighter Basketball Shoes: Shoe or Psychology Effect?" published in the International Journal of Sports Physiology and Performance in 2015. This study examined how the weight of shoes affects basketball performance, with the testing divided into two parts:

  1. Side-to-side shuffling to test speed, moving left to right over a distance of 2.5 meters.
  2. Vertical jump test.

In the experiment, participants wore Adidas adizero Crazy Light 2 shoes with weights attached to the back of the shoes, creating three groups:

  1. Light: approximately 18.4 grams
  2. Medium: approximately 17 grams
  3. Heavy: approximately 17.7 grams

Participants were divided into two groups: those who were informed about the shoe weight and those who were not. The results were as follows:

Group 1 (Informed): Those with the "Light" shoes performed the side shuffles the fastest and achieved the highest jumps. Participants wearing the "Heavy" shoes scored the lowest in the group.

In the group that was not informed about the weight, performance did not differ significantly. Even though those wearing the "Heavy" shoes tended to score lower, it was not statistically significant.

Given these results, it should be clear whether the weight of basketball shoes affects performance. The answer is: not directly. However, the psychological data suggests that the group unaware of the shoe weight performed just as well, likely because they weren't worried about the weight hindering their performance. In the informed group, the knowledge of wearing "Light" shoes may have contributed to a better mindset, which in turn improved performance. Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference regarding what makes a player feel most comfortable.

It is clear that the weight of basketball shoes should not be the deciding factor when making a purchase. Let's look at 3 criteria to help you choose the right basketball shoes.

3 Things to Consider When Choosing Basketball Shoes

Consider the type of basketball shoes

Have you ever wondered why basketball shoes are designed to be bulky and thick? Generally, basketball shoes come in three types, each suited for different playing positions:

High-tops: Best for centers, as this position involves frequent jumping and mid-air collisions. These shoes provide ankle support, helping to keep the ankle stable upon landing and reducing the risk of rolls.

Mid-tops: These cover the ankle by about an inch, providing a balance of agility for both offense and defense. They are suitable for forwards.

Low-tops: These provide no ankle coverage, making them lighter and more agile. They are suitable for players who need speed, especially "guards."

All three types of basketball shoes offer different levels of ankle support. High-tops excel at absorbing impact and preventing injury, while mid and low-tops prioritize lightness and agility. Choosing based on the shoe type is a good way to ensure it aligns with your specific position and needs.

Good basketball shoes must have soles that fit the shape of your feet and provide stability, as players are constantly moving, often laterally.

  • Outsole: Should be flat to accommodate lateral movement (unlike running shoes, which are designed for forward motion).
  • Midsole: Must be cushioned to absorb impact well.
  • Upper: Should have a system to protect the ankle from injury without restricting movement.
  • Laces: Many prefer flat laces because they are less likely to come undone, preventing trips and accidents on the court.

Consider the court surface

You should choose shoes suitable for the playing surface. For indoor courts with parquet floors, choose shoes designed for indoor use, which feature thin, fine, and detailed tread patterns. The rubber is also lighter, softer, and more flexible for better grip. Do not use indoor basketball shoes on outdoor courts, as this will cause the soles to wear out quickly.

Consider the shape of your feet

When buying any shoes, whether they are basketball shoes or running shoes, the first thing to check is your foot shape and size to ensure a perfect fit. Wearing shoes without considering your foot type can sometimes lead to injuries.
