Where to buy running shoes and running gear for marathons
Running is considered one of the most popular forms of exercise because it is a sport that can be done solo. The essential starter gear consists only of a pair of running shoes, workout clothes, and a pair of socks. There are many types of running, and one race that everyone must have heard of is the marathon. This article will take you through the marathon, including its history, categories, and where to shop for running shoes and running gear for marathon running.
Types of Marathons
Marathons can be classified into 5 categories based on distance:
1. Fun run or Micro Marathon: This is the most frequently held type of race, covering a distance of 3.5 - 5 kilometers or approximately 2.18 - 3.11 miles. Many know it as a charity walk or charity run. For those who are interested in running but have never participated in a race before, are beginners, want to join with friends and family, or want to meet new people and experience a run that isn't too strenuous, this is a great choice. It is the shortest category, and true to its name, it’s fun—you can jog or walk while chatting, and you’ll reach the finish line in no time.
2. Mini Marathon or Quarter Marathon: Meaning one-fourth of a marathon, this covers a distance of 10.5 kilometers or approximately 6.56 miles. It is a popular run for health-conscious runners. Participants in this type of race should have done some training, such as running 5 - 10 kilometers regularly. In races, organizers might use 'k' to indicate the distance, such as 10k meaning 10 kilometers.
3. Half Marathon: This is a run of 21 kilometers or approximately 13.1 / 13.11 miles, also known as a 21K run. Those who dream of running a full marathon often participate in a half marathon to train their bodies for a more challenging level. To participate in this, runners must be well-prepared, have done sufficient training, and have some running experience. Being ill-prepared can lead to health issues such as muscle injuries, cramps, or even fainting.
4. Marathon or Full Marathon: This is a run of 42.195 kilometers or approximately 26.2 / 26.219 miles, also known as a 42K or 42.2K run. It is considered the global standard distance, including its use in the Olympic Games. Those who wish to participate must train well and be prepared physically—including sleep and nutrition—as well as mentally.
5. Ultra marathon: This is any run longer than 42.195 kilometers or 26.2 / 26.219 miles, such as 50 kilometers, 60 kilometers, and so on. It is suitable for experienced runners who have already completed marathons and want to push their limits. Before participating in an ultra marathon, it is recommended to have a physical check-up by a doctor. Runners should be professionals or individuals who have trained to have the strength and endurance to run for many consecutive hours.
Why 42.195 kilometers? Why the fraction?
This story goes back to 490 B.C., when Greece fought Persia at the "Plain of Marathon" (this is where the name Marathon comes from). After Greece defeated Persia, a messenger named Pheidippides ran barefoot from the Plain of Marathon to Athens to deliver the news of victory. He collapsed and died after announcing, "We have won!" The distance he ran was 36.72 kilometers.
In 1896, Greece held its first marathon race at a distance of 40 kilometers during the Olympic Games.
It wasn't until 1908 that the marathon distance was increased to 42 kilometers because it started at Windsor Castle and finished at the White City Stadium, with the finish line positioned in front of the Royal Box at the Olympic stadium.
Later, in 1921, the standard marathon distance was officially set at 42.195 kilometers, a figure that has remained the international standard to this day.
Where to buy running gear and running shoes for marathons
For those interested in participating in any type of marathon, besides being mentally and physically ready, your gear must also be prepared, especially running equipment like running shoes.
Runners should choose running shoes made from quality materials, and select the size and type that fit their foot shape and size. Running shoes should be lightweight, provide good arch support, and have outsoles with tread to prevent slipping and help absorb shock. Choosing the right running shoes helps protect your feet from inflammation and various running injuries.
