How should I warm up and cool down to relieve leg pain after exercising?
Who says Warming Up and Cooling Down before and after working out isn't important?
Have you ever noticed that whenever we join a workout class—like yoga, Pilates, or weight training—the trainer or instructor always makes us warm up before we start, and cool down at the end to help our muscles relax? But have you ever wondered what would happen to your muscles and your body if you skipped both the warm-up and the cool-down?
Today, Rev Edition, an importer and distributor of workout gear, running shoes, and more, will clear up the mystery of why warming up and stretching before and after exercise are so important, and what happens to your body if you don't do them.
Did you know what causes post-workout soreness?
Soreness in the arms, legs, and all over the body after a workout occurs because the body is in motion; the muscles use energy, which is then burned off. Besides energy, this process also produces lactic acid. It is this lactic acid that causes muscle aches and pains.
In addition, muscle soreness can also stem from muscle tears caused by excessive strain. Even small tears in the muscle fibers can result in subsequent muscle aches.
Is it true that skipping a warm-up before exercise harms your body?
This is a question on many people's minds. The answer is this: if you don't set aside time for a warm-up before sports or exercise, your muscle temperature won't rise as much as it should, and there won't be enough blood flow to the muscles. This makes the muscles involved unable to withstand the forces of stretching, pulling, or contraction, leading to "micro-injuries"—small muscle tears that can cause muscle spasms or cramps during exercise, and may even lead to severe muscle injury.
What is dynamic stretching for a warm-up?
Warming up with dynamic stretching involves stretching muscles and joints while the body is in motion. Medical research has found that doing too much static stretching before sports significantly increases the risk of harm and injury.
For example, dynamic stretches before running include leg swings—kicking your leg as far or as high as possible to get them moving.
Should you warm up or stretch before playing sports?
Generally, you should warm up before stretching. For instance, start with a light jog to gradually raise your heart rate and ensure there is adequate blood flow to your muscles. Only after that should you begin your stretches.
Don't forget to cool down after working out
Did you know that a proper cool-down helps reduce the risk of dizziness or low blood pressure after sports or exercise? During a workout, your body temperature rises and blood circulation shifts toward the extremities—your feet and legs—rather than other areas, reducing the amount of blood flowing back to the heart and causing potential dizziness. This is why a 5-10 minute cool-down after exercising is essential.
Cooling down is also important for the muscles used during exercise. If you don't cool down, muscles remain tense and contracted, which is a primary cause of post-workout soreness.
What is static stretching for a cool-down?
Static stretching should be the final step after a cool-down. It should be performed until your pulse and heart rate return to normal, usually for about 5-10 minutes. Static stretching focuses on holding a pose for 10-20 seconds, such as a wall push stretch or toe touches.
4 Simple Warm-up Exercises Before Your Workout
-
Squats
Squats are a popular exercise for warming up before running or joining a weight training class.
• Stand straight, feet shoulder-width apart, and clasp your hands in front of your chest.

Leg Swings

• Swing your leg forward to about waist height, alternating left and right. Continue for 45 seconds on each side, for 3 sets.
-
Front Hip Stretch (Lunges)
• Stand straight, feet shoulder-width apart. Step one foot forward, keep your weight centered, and lower your back knee almost to the floor.
• Ensure your knees are at 90-degree angles. Alternate left and right for 45 seconds to complete 1 set. Do 3 sets.
-
Toe Touches
• Stand straight, feet shoulder-width apart.
• Bend forward while engaging your core.
• Use your right hand to touch your left foot.
• Return to a standing position and alternate sides. Do 10 reps per set, for 3 sets.
4 Simple Cool-down Exercises After Exercise
-

• Fold one leg backward, grab your foot with your hand, and gently pull your heel toward your glutes, keeping both knees close together until you feel a stretch in your thigh.
• Hold for 45 seconds on each side, for 3 sets.

-
Side Thigh Stretch
• Stand straight, cross your left leg behind your right, and tilt your body to the side (left or right) as if trying to reach your knee with your fingertips. Hold for 15-20 seconds.
• Alternate sides for a total of 3 sets.
As you can see, both warming up and cooling down are essential for your muscles and body. Before your next workout, don't forget to warm up and prepare your muscles to prevent soreness or injury. More importantly, the gear you use also matters; choose running shoes tailored to your running style or sportswear suitable for your sport to maximize the efficiency of your workout.
